The Young and the Restless

Children help add a youthful spirit to your wedding ceremony. Assigning an age-appropriate duty and keeping them entertained is a sure-fire way to keep everyone feeling young-at-heart.

Q: What is a junior bride?

A: A junior bride/groom is usually present when the bride or groom brings children into the marriage. Typically they dress similar to their male or female counterpart and symbolize the union of two families.

Q: How old is too old for a flower girl?

A: The flower girl is generally between three to eight years old, but a mature two-year-old could also work. Junior bridesmaids are usually reserved for the nine- to 14-year-olds and are often responsible for duties like candle lighting.

Q: How many flower girls can you have?

A: The flower girl should be someone close to the bride and groom. If two or three girls fit into this category, there is no problem having a few. Have the girls walk together and they will be more confidant and two or three times as cute.

Q: What is the appr

opriate age for a ring bearer? Does he always carry the ring or does the best man hold that?

A: The ring bearer, like the flower girl, is between three to eight years old, but uses your best judgment if in doubt. The ring bearer carries two rings down the aisle, but they are only look-a-likes; the best man will hold the actual rings.

Q: Should I hire a babysitter for the wedding?

A: Yes, keeping the children occupied is the best plan. Hire a babysitter to watch the children during the ceremony, possibly in a separate room. Ask your caterer to bring lunch packs specifically for your little guests filled with sandwiches and finger foods. You can also add paper and crayons to each pack. After dinner, consider having kid-friendly entertainment like a puppet show or a clown.
